THE HIDDEN SIDE OF HERMES
AND THE BASSIN OF SKINAKAS
The discovery of an
enormous crater that was spotted in Hermes from the observatory of
Skinakas found in Psiloritis Mountains constitutes already a very
important international scientific event in the field of Astronomy. |

Hermes is the less explored
planet with a solid crust. Only 45% of its surface has been photographed
by the spacecraft of NASA "Mariner" during three approaches in 1974 and
1975, while the rest 55% remains until today unexplored, since
during the approaches by "Mariner" it was not getting any light from the
sun! The crater was created from
the collision of an enormous asteroid 4 billion yeas ago and its
discovery happened in the spring of 2002 by the Russian scientist Leonid
Ksanfomality, whose grandfather, by a strange coincidence, was coming
from Crete!
Other observatories have also confirmed the discovery of the Russian
researcher. Now scientists hope that this enormous crater progressively
will reveal enough of its secrets. It took the name "Skinakas basin" and
it is reported in terms of size as the third crater in our solar system
after the South Pole - Atken basin in the Moon with 2500 km diameter and
the Hellas basin in Aries with 2100 km diameter.
