Lyre players of the antiquity

Have you ever considered who our ancient Cretan musical ancestors might be? To know more, we need to take a long trip to the past. Let us embark on an imaginary time-machine and let’s go back, far back…

LYRE PLAYERS OF ANTIQUITY

Our first stop will be on the 7th century BC. There, we will meet Thaleta, a famous poet from Gortyna or otherwise Eloro. Plutarchus informs us that his poetry was about hymns to the God Apollo. Indeed, Thaleta is considered to be the inventor of the Cretan musical style.

It is also worthwhile to meet Epimenides, who lived later than Thaleta and originated from Knossos. His activities did not confine themselves to just musical themes, as mythical sources also report him as a fortune-teller, healer, ministrant and finally one of the seven wise men of Greece....
