The ongoing research of Savas Petrakis, conducted since 1999, has been a
true apocalypse, as it brought to light the original music of Crete, a
form of direct artistic interaction between the performer and the
listener without microphones, mp3 or video clips.
“I am able to claim that I caught the good moments of Cretan music”
states the researcher. “In the music recordings that I made since May
1999, the art of notable artists of old school Cretan music was
recorded, each with a distinct local sound and identity, which renders
the music of each place recognizable. I imagine that the same is true

artists, who assign a unique beauty to everything they play with
inherent simplicity and ease. Without unnecessary verve but at the same
time vivid and genuine, the sound they produce awakens emotions that we
usually feel when listening to great musicians of the past, of any kind
of music. Some unique music pieces we meet in eastern Asterousia include
“ethianos pidiktos”, the repetitive verses (known as “kontylies” in the
Cretan idiom) of Lyratzakis and Petroyiannis, as well as “chaniotis” and
“maleviziotis” performed by Lyratzakis. Equally interesting are the
numerous music creations of Pantelis Stavroulakis... |
