The island of Crete is gradually recognized as an ideal film location, a
process that started about fifty years ago. Crete owes its advantages to
its large size, warm climate, rich natural environment and plethora of
historical monuments. However, there are some constrains that prevent
the island to achieve full recognition as a film location. Most of these
constraints are related to the lack of an organized carrier within the
local administration that would focus exclusively on the promotion of
the island to film industries, the attraction of film productions and
funds and the purchase of the necessary supplies and resources. The
films presented in this article were shot in Crete and have radically
changed the way people worldwide picture the island, as well as the way
Cretan people perceive themselves.
