A girl born on October 13,
1934 in Chania and meant to become one of the most known Greeks in the
world. Nana Moushouri, Nana of Greece, with the characteristic glasses
and the passport always off-hand, said good bye to her public with a
world tour that was completed last summer in the Herodeion theater in
Athens.
"I was not forced. It was my choice". So simply and decisively, Nana
Moushouri explained a while ago, the happy end of a musical adventure
that began years ago and led her to all five continents. That’s why once
her good friend Nikos Gatsos had said: "this girl is a boat that travels
constantly".
Nana in numbers
Her CV includes 1600 songs in eight different languages, 450 cds
published worldwide, from which more than 350 have been granted the
status of “golden” and “platinum”. According to the official records of
IFPI, her disk sales have exceeded 300 million worldwide, a fact that
classifies her in the same league with the Beatles and Elvis Presley. In
France, she is the female artist with the most golden disks, since the
time the institution was established in 1974. She has also received many
honorary rewards in many countries.
The last thirty years she was giving on average 100 concerts per year,
and all these years, Greek songs had their big share in her program.
In Chania
The year that Nana was born her family lived in Chania. Her father,
Kostas Mouschouris, worked as a projectionist but he also loved gambling
very much. So much that, when her mother Aliki was about to give birth
to her, he left to call the midwife but he made a stop in order to see
how the left unfinished game was going. He came back home in the morning
and Nana was already born! In her biography she mentions that her
parents always taught her to be a good person and help her to deal with
her weaknesses in the same way they were trying to deal with their own.
They always revealed to her the bright side through the dark one.
