Maybe some of STIGMES readers remember the “historic”
hippy days of Matala, when everyone was sunbathing in total nudity at
the world famous beach. Nowadays, nudism is a common practice for many
Europeans, considered as a right to freely dispose of one’s body, but
the number of its adepts is rather decreasing.
The
only exclusively nudist hotel of Greece operates in Crete, near Sfakia,
with a capacity of 180 beds, while hotel “Calypso” near Plakias had a
similar infrastructure till 2001. Many of the island unique beaches are
included in international nudist guides and are frequented by naturists,
both local and foreigners: Paleochora, Soughia, Aghia Roumeli, Aghios
Pavlos, Glika Nera, Filaki, Plakias, Ammoudi, Skinaria, Damnoni, Marmara,
Komos, Kalamaki, Kedrodasos, Hersonissos, Lentas, Gavdos, Ligkres,
Triopetra and so on… This makes Crete one of the few “nudist –
paradises” of Greece. However, our research didn’t return any organized
Cretan nudist club...
