A year has passed since the foundation of the “University of the
Mountains” was signed in Omalos of Chania, and the newly founded
“University” pioneers in a movement set in the heart of the mountainous
areas in Crete.
When science is subjected to society, researches work together with the
local authorities, but also with the simple people, the producers and
the young people that have visions for a better future, they all
together unite and attempt to develop rural Crete. Prefectures,
municipalities, cultural associations and unions of producers have all
welcomed the initiative of a group of scientists, who felt the needs of
society and created the “University of the Mountains”. A year has passed
since the foundation of the “University of the Mountains” was signed in
Omalos of Chania, and the newly founded “University” pioneers in a
movement set in the mountainous areas of Crete.
The members of the “University of the Mountains” target simple, everyday
people and approach them through various actions and initiatives aiming
to promote and develop the mountainous areas of Crete, to preserve and
popularize the cultural identity of the island and to support the
traditional elements that characterize local communities.
However, the initiatives are not limited in the island of Crete; the
“University of Crete” gradually expands its actions to the rest of the
country.
