By late June the crop of early produce cultivated
in the hot-houses at Ierapetra is collected, and the hothouses are thoroughly
cleaned from crop residues.

The nylon covers that keep the hothouses warm
need to be replaced every three years. Then come the «nylon» men to start
their acrobatic work. They are the people who climb up the wooden frame
of the hothouses to remove the plastic covers that keep the tender plants
warm for the out-of-season production
Working some meters above the ground, unsupported
and without any safety precautions, is a risky occupation. Occasionally,
unexpected gusts of wind pose serious danger to the people removing the
nylon covers. But the «nylon» men are well aware of the occupational risks
involved.
